BAM Construction has entered talks with Sheffield University to deliver a flagship hub building for the social sciences departments.
If successfully concluded, BAM would replace preferred bidder Kier, which had been lined up for the £65m job with a pre-construction services agreement over a year ago.
Kier had been expected to start the 180,000 sq ft complex, which will be built on a sports pitch on the western edge of the Broomhill campus, at the start of 2019.
The project was delayed by nearly a year after a University spending review. Following the delay, Kier has failed to agree a final contract price with the University.
Initially, the scheme was expected to cost around £50m but that has soared to £65m.
Second place bidder BAM is now in talks with the University about taking on the contract although nothing has been agreed, according to project sources.
The two-year project will unite three departments – economics, politics and sociology – as a ‘hub’ under one roof.
Currently the Social Sciences estate is spread across 19 different buildings across campus.
