O’Halloran & O’Brien has secured the contract to carry out a major package of enabling works at Medway Council’s flagship £150m Strood Civic riverside regeneration.

The 32-month programme, running from September 2025 to April 2028, covers phases 1B to 5 of the brownfield site’s preparation for full development.

The Gravesend-based contractor will undertake extensive land-raising and groundworks, including drainage, service installation and the removal of obstructions, to get the former Civic Centre plot ready for the 195-home scheme.

The redevelopment, led by council-owned Medway Development Company, was approved last December and will transform the prime riverfront site with a mix of flats and houses, 25% of which will be affordable. Plans also include a commercial space, public gardens and a new riverside walkway.

Flood defence works to protect the site have already been completed under earlier Local Growth Fund-backed phases.

The enabling works contract marks the next big step towards construction starting on the main build.
