Cumberland Council has picked a 15-strong contractor line-up for a new four-year capital works framework covering building and civil engineering jobs across the county.

The framework will be used for schemes up to £6m — with scope to push above that threshold on more complex mixed civils and building projects. Each lot carries an estimated value of £175m.

Local mainstays Cubby Construction, Story Contracting and Thomas Armstrong came away as the biggest winners, securing places on all three lots.

Equans Regeneration, Eric Wright Civil Engineering, R H Irving Construction and JN Bentley also made the list for larger mixed projects.

Competition for places was intense, with more than 50 tenders submitted across the three lots. Morgan Sindall, Bethell, A E Yates, C R Reynolds and Erith were among the big regional names missing out entirely.

The framework will cover everything from school extensions, refurbishments and corporate building upgrades to bridges, retaining walls, town-centre public realm schemes, junction improvements, drainage packages and flood prevention works.

The framework runs from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2029 after a short standstill period ends later this month.
