Balfour Beatty has appointed Nick Rowan as managing director of its construction business in Scotland, replacing long-serving boss Hector MacAulay.

Rowan will take up the role in August, marking a major step up after three decades with the firm.

He joined as a graduate surveyor and has spent the last 10 years as director for new business in Scotland.

A chartered surveyor, Rowan has played a key role in expanding Balfour’s Scottish project pipeline, including winning the A9 Dualling Scheme and major offshore grid work under SSEN Transmission’s ASTI programme.

He replaces Hector MacAulay, who has led the Scottish business since 2015 and will retire at the end of the year after a phased handover.

Nick Crossfield, CEO of UK Construction Services, said: “There is a significant pipeline of work ahead in Scotland requiring close collaboration across teams.

“Nick is ideally placed to lead this growth, sustain our success and build on Hector’s legacy.”

Rowan said: “With Scotland playing a key role in our growth strategy and the UK’s transition to Net Zero, I am excited to lead our Scotland business at such a pivotal time.”
