Roger Bullivant (RBL) has become the first foundations contractor in the UK to trial a fully battery-powered pile driving rig.
The firm deployed a 63-tonne Junttan PMx2e rig on Morgan Sindall’s £70m Ardrossan Community Campus job in North Ayrshire, where it is driving 581 steel tubular piles up to 16m deep into reclaimed industrial land.
Powered by a 392kWh battery pack, the rig delivers up to eight hours of piling per charge, with on-site charging allowing a full day’s operation.
As well as pioneering the all-electric rig to cut CO2 emissions, RBL boosted the project’s sustainability credentials by using repurposed tubular steel from John Lawrie Tubulars – saving 1,622 tonnes of CO₂.
The Ardrossan scheme, set to open in 2027, will provide new homes for Winton Primary and Ardrossan Academy. RBL has been involved since 2022, advising Blyth & Blyth engineers on piling solutions for the complex ground conditions.
