Workers at the Sellafield nuclear site are planning a fresh week-long strike after talks over site-specific allowances again stalled.

Hundreds of electricians, pipe-fitters, welders, joiners and groundworkers will walk out until 2 November in the latest phase of an escalation plan coordinated by union Unite.

The union claims construction staff employed by six subcontractors — Altrad, Enigma, ES Steel, Kaefer, Meldrum and PPS Electrical — are being denied the same site-specific allowances paid on other major nuclear projects such as Hinkley Point C.

The action will again be coupled with an overtime ban aimed at maximising disruption to site operations.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “The employers at Sellafield need to start playing fair by our members, who are all highly skilled workers operating in an extremely challenging environment.”

Sellafield Ltd said it did not directly employ the striking workers but that “safety and security will remain the top priority” throughout the action.
