{"id":1703,"date":"2019-01-02T09:54:20","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T09:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=1703"},"modified":"2019-01-02T09:54:20","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T09:54:20","slug":"britain-heads-for-worst-house-building-decade-since-1940s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/britain-heads-for-worst-house-building-decade-since-1940s\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain heads for worst house building decade since 1940s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Britain is heading for the worst house building decade since World War Two.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Government efforts to boost house building, completions in England between 2010 and 2019 are set to average out at around 130,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>This is well short of the 147,000 achieved in the 2000s or the 150,000 of the 1990s, and half of the level in the 1960s and 1970s.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"163817\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionenquirer.com%2Fdirectory%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/enquirer_directory_mpu.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The picture becomes even worse when population size is factored in.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, the new-build construction rate in England was roughly the equivalent of one home for every 14\u00a0people over the decade. In the 2010s,\u00a0that ratio was one to 43, more than three times higher.<\/p>\n<p>The figures are\u00a0improved somewhat when you factor in conversions of existing properties, which push the total up &#8211; but even then, the total of net additional dwellings &#8211; the yardstick for overall housing supply &#8211; is likely to be lower this decade than last.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"99972\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.peri.ltd.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/52_PERI_AD_MPU_CE_300x250px_DEC-18_AW.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Across the United Kingdom as a whole, the pattern is broadly similar, with house building falling\u00a0from a peak of 3.6m new units\u00a0in the 1960s to 1.9m in the 1990s and 2000s, with the 2010s set to come in lower still.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Colvile, Director of the Centre for Policy Studies, said: \u201cThe housing crisis is blighting the lives of a generation, and robbing them of the dream of home ownership.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But as this analysis shows, this is not just the consequence of the financial crisis &#8211; it is part of a pattern stretching back half a century, in which we have steadily built fewer and fewer new homes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Government has rightly promised to focus on this issue, and there are encouraging signs that housebuilding is picking\u00a0up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But ministers need to take bold\u00a0action in 2019 to ensure that the 2020s become the decade in which we break this hugely damaging cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"128602\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Felfinkitchens.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3DConstruction%2520Enquirer%26utm_medium%3DMPU%26utm_campaign%3D100718%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elfin_Construction-Enquirer-mpu_cyan-300x250-5.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>from Construction Enquirer http:\/\/bit.ly\/2VoFoDy<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Britain is heading for the worst house building decade since World War Two.
