bookkeeper stole \u00a3100k from cladding contractor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A mother and daughter stole around \u00a3100,000 from a Cambridgeshire cladding contractor by using a company credit card to fund theme park trips, vets bills, a private car number plate and house cleaners.<\/p>\n<p>Nicola Hayter, 51, of Ely worked as a bookkeeper for contractor Retrofit UK from 2009 to 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2016 the company held a suspension meeting with Hayter because she had taken a loan from them and had asked for \u00a3600 but then taken a further \u00a33,000.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"165577\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.haki.com%2Fproduct%2Fhaki-stair-towers%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE_HAKI-MPU_SEPT18.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hayter had also used the company\u2019s trade account to purchase personal items, Cambridge Crown Court heard.<\/p>\n<p>Retrofit looked deeper into their accounts and discovered Hayter had overpaid her own bonuses and spent even more money on the trade account.<\/p>\n<p>Hayter had spent large amounts on the company credit card but had been paying the bills off at the end of the month to avoid being caught.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"95430\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nasc.org.uk%2Fnews%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE_NASC_FREE-GUIDANCE.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>For a period of time, Hayter\u2019s daughter Emily Griffiths, 26, of\u00a0 Waterbeach, had also worked for Retrofit.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations revealed Hayter had overpaid her daughter\u2019s wages and transferred even more money from the company\u2019s bank account to Griffiths when she was no longer working there.<\/p>\n<p>Hayter had also used the company\u2019s bank account to pay for Griffiths\u2019s house to be cleaned.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"93789\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionline.co.uk%2Fevents%2F\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Constructionline-MTB-GIF.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In police interviews Hayter admitted spending some money on the company\u2019s card but suggested others also used it.<\/p>\n<p>She admitted transferring Griffiths \u00a38,500 to \u2018help her out\u2019 but said she was going to pay it back.<\/p>\n<p>Hayter told officers she had overpaid her own bonus by mistake and claimed she had upped the limit on the company\u2019s card to pay the company\u2019s bills.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"94467\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sapabuildingsystem.com%2Fen%2Fuk%2F%3Futm_source%3DCE%26utm_medium%3DBanner%26utm_campaign%3DBrand_Awareness%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE-Sapa-v1-1017.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When Griffiths was interviewed, she admitted also using the company card at Legoland as well as for car repairs and new tyres.<\/p>\n<p>But she claimed Hayter had the authority to let other people use it.<\/p>\n<p>Both Hayter and Griffiths stood trial at Cambridge Crown Court earlier this month.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"145884\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fndtg.training%2Fccdo-card%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CCDO-Banner-Loop.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hayter pleaded guilty to theft while the trial was ongoing and jurors later found Griffiths guilty of possessing criminal property.<\/p>\n<p>At the same court Griffiths was sentenced to 34 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>She was also ordered to complete a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"94603\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Strife-Twitter-Bans-300x250.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hayter is due to be sentenced on April 18 after being released on police bail and given the chance to repay the money she stole.<\/p>\n<p>DC Kate Housham said: \u201cHayter and Griffiths used the business\u2019s bank card for their own gain with absolutely no consideration for others as they stole from their own employer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of behaviour is unacceptable and we will not tolerate it in our communities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"209475\"
