{"id":226,"date":"2018-11-07T08:12:11","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T08:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=226"},"modified":"2018-11-07T08:12:11","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T08:12:11","slug":"plans-for-birmingham-nec-city-and-airport-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/plans-for-birmingham-nec-city-and-airport-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Plans for Birmingham \u2018NEC city\u2019 and airport expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birmingham City Council and the owners of the National Exhibition Centre have set out ambitious expansion plans for an extra 3.4m sq ft of floor space and 2,500 homes.<\/p>\n<p>The publication of the &#8216;NEC.city&#8217; masterplan yesterday coincided with Birmingham Airport setting out its separate plan to invest \u00a3500m expanding the adjacent airport facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Together the two masterplans promise to start up the Midlands\u00a0Engine plan and promise a sustained construction boom in the Solihull area over the next 15 years.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NEC.City-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-250886\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NEC.City-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1922\" height=\"936\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;NEC.City&#8217; plan will see 75 hectares of land around the NEC Campus in Solihull redeveloped. It will go before the city council cabinet for backing next Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_250884\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NEC.city-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-250884 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NEC.city-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1898\" height=\"964\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Residential plans around the central lake area<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Early phases of the development over the next five years could include a Film Studio, initial phases of residential development and infrastructure improvements including the realignment of Pendigo Way to release development opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"93789\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionline.co.uk%2Fevents%2F\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Constructionline-MeetTheBuyer-295x245-v4.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>NEC Group\u00a0was recently sold to private equity funds managed by Blackstone.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the original sale of the NEC Group in 2015 the City Council retained a freehold interest in the land at the Solihull site.<\/p>\n<p>The Masterplan will fuse entertainment, leisure, exhibition space, commercial and residential offers across a 175ha campus with the existing NEC at its heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"242821\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Foffsiteconstructionshow.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/OCS MPC Banner 2018-10.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ian Ward Leader of Birmingham City Council said: &#8220;I am delighted to launch this Masterplan which sets out a radical vision for the transformation of the NEC campus which will not only see the Midlands International appeal and global position strengthened but also bring huge economic benefits to our local communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2018-11-06-at-22.32.05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-250883\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2018-11-06-at-22.32.05.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"952\" height=\"954\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Birmingham Airport said it would expand facilities over 15 years to lift capacity from\u00a0around 13m to 18m passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the plans involve redesigning and improving the airport&#8217;s current facilities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_250888\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Birmingham-Airport.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-250888 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Birmingham-Airport.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1888\" height=\"1012\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Airport masterplan will be finalised early next year<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This includes expanding the main terminal for larger departure lounges with more bars and restaurants.
