Liverpool City Council has instructed contractor Graham Group to start the first package of works\u00a0next week for the \u00a347m Liverpool City Centre Connectivity scheme.<\/p>\n

The firm will focus on re-engineering major routes and widening pavement from the city\u2019s commercial district through to the city\u2019s retail and knowledge districts.<\/p>\n

The first element will begin on Victoria Street running from North John Street to the Queensway Tunnel and is expected to complete in November.<\/p>\n

Councillor James Noakes, Liverpool City Council\u2019s Cabinet Member for Highways, said:\u00a0\u201cWith a growing residential population, a huge rise in visitors and major developments now taking shape, how we navigate around the city centre needs a radical rethink in key locations and some major improvements.<\/p>\n

“The beginning of phase one at Victoria Street signals a new chapter for how we use our city centre, which when fully completed will open up some exciting opportunities in our public realm and will redefine how everyone from residents, workers, shoppers, students and tourists can enjoy exploring and discovering this amazing city.”<\/p>\n

The remaining packages of the LCCC scheme will see\u00a0a remodelling of Lime Street, with a new event space, and The Strand as well as the introduction of\u00a0new bridges across Canning Dock\u00a0to enhance the visitor experience to the city\u2019s museums and\u00a0World Heritage site.<\/p>\n

The LCCC scheme is one of the flagship highways projects in the city council\u2019s wider\u00a0\u00a3500m Better Roads programme.<\/p>\n

This also includes a \u00a3100m programme to upgrade\u00a0the city\u2019s North Liverpool corridor\u00a0with the creation of two new waterfront link roads to support the council\u2019s\u00a0proposed new Cruise Liner Terminal and a new Isle of Man Ferry Terminal at Peel Land and Property\u2019s\u00a0\u00a35bn Liverpool Waters scheme.<\/p>\n
