plant tax cheat ordered to pay back nearly \u00a31m"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Leicestershire construction machinery salesman who was jailed for tax fraud after he lied about his business deals has been ordered to repay nearly \u00a31 million or face a further seven years behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond John Weaver, 70, of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, was jailed for 30 months in March 2017 after he failed to declare sales of diggers, excavators and bulldozers to HM Revenue and Customs, allowing him to fraudulently pocket VAT received from his customers.<\/p>\n<p>Weaver was yesterday ordered to repay \u00a3990,000 within three months and will now face selling his assets which include a \u00a31.2m home, a villa in Portugal and a collection of cars.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"93789\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionline.co.uk%2Fevents%2F\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Constructionline-MTB-GIF.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Diccon Wood, Assistant Director, Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said: \u201cWeaver made a deliberate decision to not disclose his sales in an attempt to avoid his tax obligations and keep the cash.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His crimes put him behind bars and now he\u2019ll repay what he stole or spend even more time in prison, and still have to pay the money back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur actions don\u2019t stop once someone is convicted, we will look to reclaim the stolen money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"209475\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faset.org.uk%2Fguidance-2%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" in December 2012, the conman acknowledged there was \u2018something wrong\u2019 with his paperwork, but denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p>And in a bid to avoid paying Income Tax in the UK, Weaver had earlier told HMRC that he resided in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>But enquiries with the Portuguese authorities revealed he paid no tax there, claiming his main residence was in fact Dubai.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"145884\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fndtg.training%2Fccdo-card%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CCDO-Banner-Loop.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Weaver admitted the fraud in February 2017 and was jailed the following month at Leicester Crown Court.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, at the same court, he was ordered to repay the money by April or serve more time in prison and still
