{"id":2864,"date":"2019-02-08T09:11:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T09:11:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=2864"},"modified":"2019-02-08T09:11:43","modified_gmt":"2019-02-08T09:11:43","slug":"steel-worker-killed-during-first-week-on-the-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/steel-worker-killed-during-first-week-on-the-job\/","title":{"rendered":"Steel worker killed during first week on the job"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A steel fabricator and a scaffolding firm have been fined following the death of a 37-year-old worker.<\/p>\n<p>Preston Crown Court heard how Andrew Bowes was crushed to death in March 2012 during his first week on the job.<\/p>\n<p>Bowes was a metal fabricator employed by Larkin Eng Services Ltd.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"209475\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faset.org.uk%2Fmembers%2Ffaset-member-list%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE_FASET-MPU_FEB19.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He died while working at the company\u2019s premises in Barrow in Furness.<\/p>\n<p>Larkin Eng Services Ltd had contracted Cumbria Design Scaffold Ltd to collect two large metal walkways and deliver them to a customer using a flatbed lorry fitted with a mounted crane.<\/p>\n<p>Bowes was directed to assist with the lifting operation by his employer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"142065\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=+http%3A%2F%2Fwww.plantworx.co.uk%2Fevent%2F2019%2Fexhibit%3F_toolbar%3Dexhibit%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PWx2019-Button-Ad-300x250.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first walkway had been lifted onto the back of the lorry but was not fastened down.<\/p>\n<p>As the crane moved to pick up the second walkway, a sling became snagged on the first walkway, causing it to tip over and fall from the back of the lorry onto Bowes who sustained fatal crush injuries.<\/p>\n<p>An HSE investigation found that Cumbria Design Scaffold Ltd had failed to properly plan the lifting operation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"95430\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nasc.org.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NASC scrolling ads for Construction Enquirer.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The investigation also found that Larkin Eng Services Ltd had failed in its duty to ensure the safety of Bowes.who had only been working for the company a week.<\/p>\n<p>Cumbria Design Scaffold Ltd of Ulverston, Cumbria pleaded guilty to safety breaches and was ordered to pay fines of \u00a360,000 and costs of \u00a327464.28.<\/p>\n<p>Larkin Eng Services Ltd of Barrow in Furness, Cumbria also pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay fines of \u00a320000 and costs of \u00a327211.09.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"94467\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sapabuildingsystem.com%2Fen%2Fuk%2F%3Futm_source%3DCE%26utm_medium%3DBanner%26utm_campaign%3DBrand_Awareness%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE-Sapa-v1-1017.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Anthony Banks said: \u201cWe would like to thank Andrew\u2019s family for their patience throughout what has been a complex investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies should always ensure that lifting operations are properly planned, organised and conducted safely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Had this lifting operation been properly planned and supervised, then this tragedy could have been averted.
