{"id":3476,"date":"2019-02-27T12:42:27","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T12:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=3476"},"modified":"2019-02-27T12:42:27","modified_gmt":"2019-02-27T12:42:27","slug":"mps-demand-review-of-working-at-height-dangers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/mps-demand-review-of-working-at-height-dangers\/","title":{"rendered":"MPs demand review of working at height dangers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MPs are demanding a major review of working at height in a bid to cut the number of deaths and accidents caused by falls.<\/p>\n<p>The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Working at Height has published a new report calling on the Government and industry to undertake a major review of working at height culture.<\/p>\n<p>It also wants to see improved reporting of incidents and introduce reporting on near misses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"165527\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conquest.ltd.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction_enquirer%26utm_campaign%3Dconstruction_enquirer_ad+%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Conquest-Advert-White-Footer.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The report, <a href=\"https:\/\/74n5c4m7.r.eu-west-1.awstrack.me\/L0\/https:%2F%2Fworkingatheight.info%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2019%2F02%2FStaying-Alive-APPG-REPORT.pdf\/1\/0102016928e0f56f-7c5d0f30-0c70-44c0-80d8-52e7d4091ac0-000000\/qFF_nu0AyKj6haE2fMjAoUGYfGA=98\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Staying Alive: Preventing Serious Injury and Fatalities while Working at Height<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>is the result of a 12 month inquiry by the APPG.<\/p>\n<p>Politicians explored why 18% of people who die at work do so as a result of a fall from height, and what steps can be taken by government and industry to prevent incidents for the millions of people in the UK that work at height.<\/p>\n<p>The report makes 4 primary recommendations to reduce the overall number of falls:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The introduction of an enhanced reporting system through RIDDOR.<\/li>\n<li>The appointment of an independent body that allows confidential, enhanced and digital reporting of all near misses, to be shared with government and industry to inform health and safety policy.<\/li>\n<li>The extension of the Working Well Together \u2013 Working Well at Height safety campaigns.<\/li>\n<li>An equivalent system to Scotland\u2019s Fatal Accident Inquiry process extended to the rest of the UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alison Thewliss, Chair of the APPG on Working at Height and MP for Glasgow Central said<em>: <\/em>\u201cEvery fall from height can have life-altering consequences for workers and their families. There is an urgent need to improve work at height culture, yet this issue is sadly not at the top of decision-makers\u2019 agenda.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"209475\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.faset.org.uk%2Fmembers%2Ffaset-member-list%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE_FASET-MPU_FEB19.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;A lack of empirical data prevents us from understanding the root causes of falls from height. This is compounded by a cultural obstacle when it comes to supporting people to report unsafe practices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have made comprehensive recommendations to government, but the APPG\u2019s work does not stop here. Our report must be the first step in a wider process of systematic and cultural change.
