{"id":3680,"date":"2019-03-05T15:35:39","date_gmt":"2019-03-05T15:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=3680"},"modified":"2019-03-05T15:35:39","modified_gmt":"2019-03-05T15:35:39","slug":"iconic-london-zoo-aviary-revamp-out-to-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/iconic-london-zoo-aviary-revamp-out-to-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Iconic London Zoo aviary revamp out to bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plans to repurpose and transform the Grade II listed Snowdon Aviary at London Zoo have come out to tender.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme, understood to cost around \u00a37m, will see the iconic structure revamped to create a world-leading facility for Black and White Colobus monkeys and other species native to forests in western and eastern Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Modernising the structure, listed in 1998 as the first permanent tensioned building in the UK, will be the most ambitious project undertaken by the Zoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"93789\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionline.co.uk%2Fevents%2F\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Constructionline-MTB-GIF.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Designed by Cedric Price with engineer Frank Newby and Lord Snowdon in 1962, it became\u00a0Britain&#8217;s first walk-through aviary.<\/p>\n<p>The main structure will be retained and restored where needed with existing aluminium mesh replaced with stainless steel netting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-09-13-at-22.58.13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-152124\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-09-13-at-22.58.13.png\" alt=\"Snowden Aviary\" width=\"1972\" height=\"1242\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Snowdon Aviary is currently on the Historic England Buildings at Risk Register given the poor condition of its structural frame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"94471\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.wicona.co.uk%2Fen%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/W_CE_140818.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Foster + Partners designed project will also include the construction of three new geodesic timber structures &#8211; a new monkey house will be connected by means of two elevated lattice\u00a0monkey highways made out of laminated bamboo and lined with stainless steel mesh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-09-13-at-22.54.10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-152126\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2017-09-13-at-22.54.10.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2017-09-13 at 22.54.10\" width=\"1900\" height=\"1300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An existing walkway within the aviary will be widened and fitted with new balustrades.<\/p>\n<p>Norman Foster said: \u201cThe rebirth of the Snowdon Aviary continues our work with historical structures.
