Highways England has confirmed its contract with Costain to deliver two key junction upgrades on the A19 in south Tyneside.<\/span><\/p>\n

The A19 Testo and Downhill Lane junction upgrades have been bundled together\u00a0into a single \u00a3125m contract as part of plans to support local proposals for an International Advanced Manufacturing Park to the north of the existing Nissan Motor factory.<\/p>\n

Construction work is expected to start\u00a0imminently on the project, which aims to ease congestion with new bridges and flyovers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The A19 appointment follows Costain’s six-year RIP framework contract award by Highways England as delivery integration partner in the north region and in the east region, announced in November 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andrew Wyllie CBE, chief executive of Costain, said:\u00a0<\/span>“I am delighted that we are at the forefront of helping Highways England deliver its ambitious Regional Investment Programme, which will significantly enhance network capacity, improving the lives of local people and supporting broad-based economic growth.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Proposals for the Testo\u2019s junction (below)<\/em>\u00a0 with the A184 would see a flyover built to bypass the roundabout in a bid to keep traffic flowing to and from the Tyne Tunnel.<\/p>\n

Just to the south of this, the Downhill Lane junction improvement (below)<\/em> would see a second bridge added south of the current junction – presently a busy single bridge \u2013 creating a more traditional elevated roundabout layout.<\/p>\n

Costain has endured a long wait for the project. The contractor was originally\u00a0appointed to deliver the Testo junction improvement back in 2006\u00a0under an early contractor involvement deal.<\/p>\n

But funding was withdrawn\u00a0in the Government\u2019s 2010 Spending Review, forcing the junction upgrade to be placed on hold.<\/p>\n

The project was resurrected in the 2015-2020 Road Investment Strategy and bundled together with the Downhill Lane scheme in a bid to cut costs. The move has effectively doubled the value of Costain’s order.<\/p>\n
