{"id":4276,"date":"2019-03-25T07:43:21","date_gmt":"2019-03-25T07:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=4276"},"modified":"2019-03-25T07:43:21","modified_gmt":"2019-03-25T07:43:21","slug":"food-firm-fined-1-8m-after-workers-fall-during-roof-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/food-firm-fined-1-8m-after-workers-fall-during-roof-repairs\/","title":{"rendered":"Food firm fined \u00a31.8m after workers fall during roof repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Food manufacturing company Karro Foods Ltd has been fined \u00a31.8m after two workers suffered serious injuries when they fell over 4 metres through a roof light.<\/p>\n<p>Leeds Magistrates\u2019 Court heard how, on 13 April 2016, the two workers were investigating a leak from the roof at the firm&#8217;s Malton site which the workers did not realise contained several roof lights.<\/p>\n<p>The workers were walking closely together and both stood on the same roof light which consequently fell through due to the weight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"128602\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Felfinkitchens.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3DConstruction%2520Enquirer%26utm_medium%3DMPU%26utm_campaign%3D100718%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Elfin_Construction-Enquirer-mpu_cyan-300x250-5.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>One worker suffered four fractured ribs, a punctured lung, and muscular contusions to his outer right thigh.<\/p>\n<p>The other suffered a fractured skull, muscular injuries to his right leg and injuries inside his ear which cause ongoing problems with his balance, memory and mental health.<\/p>\n<p>An HSE investigation found the roof was made of asbestos cement and had several roof lights situated along it but they were not visible due to the build-up of moss and dirt which had accumulated over the years. Employees had also not been made aware of them.<\/p>\n<p>Karro Foods Ltd of Malton, Yorkshire pleaded guilty to safety breaches and was fined \u00a31,866,000 and ordered to pay \u00a38,019 in costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>After the hearing, HSE inspector Mark Slater commented: \u201cThis was a wholly avoidable incident, caused by the failure of the company to provide adequate controls against the risks arising from working at height.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsideration of roof fragility and rooflights, visible or not, should be made, especially on older buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>from Construction Enquirer https:\/\/ift.tt\/2JCung4<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Food manufacturing company Karro Foods Ltd has been fined \u00a31.8m after two workers suffered serious injuries when they fell over 4 metres through a roof light.
