{"id":5090,"date":"2019-04-24T06:29:15","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T06:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=5090"},"modified":"2019-04-24T06:29:15","modified_gmt":"2019-04-24T06:29:15","slug":"opinion-lack-of-talent-at-the-top-is-hurting-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/opinion-lack-of-talent-at-the-top-is-hurting-construction\/","title":{"rendered":"Opinion: Lack of talent at the top is hurting construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We keep a keen-eye at the <em>Enquirer<\/em> on appointments at major contractors and projects.<\/p>\n<p>And they reveal a not-so-merry-go-round of talent at the industry\u2019s biggest players.<\/p>\n<p>Of course most managers on the carousel do a decent job.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"158465\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.agd-equipment.co.uk%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/AGD300x250Master.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But it&#8217;s pretty hard to fall-off even if your performance leaves a lot to be desired.<\/p>\n<p>The same old faces and CV entries crop-up regularly when new directors are unveiled.<\/p>\n<p>It means construction bosses are now like football managers.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of new entrants means a closed shop of candidates for vacant roles.<\/p>\n<p>Positions are often filled from a band of construction directors whose main selling point is that they\u2019ve done the job for a while &#8211; rather than how good they are at it.<\/p>\n<p>We hear a lot about site skills shortages.<\/p>\n<p>But the talent drought at the top of major companies is just as alarming.<\/p>\n<p>And those recruitment chickens have been coming home to roost recently.<\/p>\n<p>Some of construction\u2019s biggest names have suffered lately and the people in charge are surely a massive part of that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over-optimism&#8221; is the new blame buzz-phrase when it comes to contractors explaining mistakes on bidding and project delivery.<\/p>\n<p>But growing boardroom bonuses based on performance &#8211; real or just spreadsheet based &#8211; has seen the &#8220;over-optimism&#8221; culture spread from the top down.<\/p>\n<p>The industry needs a new generation of leaders with different ideas fit for different times.<\/p>\n<p>We still talk about changing the industry based on reports like Latham and Egan which were written before smart phones were invented.<\/p>\n<p>Construction needs to trust younger people in more senior roles to bring a fresh perspective on some deep-rooted problems.<\/p>\n<p>The old-guard isn\u2019t working too well so it\u2019s time for a change.<\/p>\n<p>from Construction Enquirer http:\/\/bit.ly\/2GwGS8c<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We keep a keen-eye at the Enquirer on appointments at major contractors and projects.
