{"id":5764,"date":"2025-06-04T06:46:45","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T06:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=5764"},"modified":"2025-06-04T06:46:45","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T06:46:45","slug":"kier-ditches-diesel-for-hydrogen-in-green-major-site-power-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/kier-ditches-diesel-for-hydrogen-in-green-major-site-power-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Kier ditches diesel for hydrogen in green major site power trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"214\" data-end=\"368\">Kier and the Environment Agency are hailing early success from a groundbreaking trial to ditch diesel in favour of solar power and green hydrogen on site.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"593\">The 12-month test at the \u00a3250m Bridgwater Tidal Barrier scheme in Somerset is assessing whether off-grid sites can run their welfare and office facilities on a combination of solar panels, hydrogen fuel cells and battery storage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"766\">From January to April, the system clocked up 16,000 kWh of clean power \u2014 with over 6,600 kWh from solar, 9,100 kWh from hydrogen, and just 300kWh drawn from back-up batteries.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"766\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"494661\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrand-accesssolutions.com%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/brand slower ezgif.com-animated-gif-maker.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"768\" data-end=\"995\">Compared to a traditional diesel generator, the trial has already saved around 20,000 litres of diesel and avoided 53 tonnes of CO\u2082e \u2014 equal to driving 195,000 miles in a diesel car or taking 350 flights from London to Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1092\">As well as slashing emissions, the setup has helped cut noise and eliminate diesel spill risks.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1338\">Jo Driffield, senior engineer at the Environment Agency, said: \u201cThis trial is a big step forward in helping the EA realise our net zero goals.
