{"id":5832,"date":"2025-06-06T08:47:02","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T08:47:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=5832"},"modified":"2025-06-06T08:47:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T08:47:02","slug":"former-hewlett-civils-firm-fails-amid-director-blame-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/former-hewlett-civils-firm-fails-amid-director-blame-game\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Hewlett civils firm fails amid director blame game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"178\" data-end=\"297\">A civils contractor set up by former Hewlett Group owner John Duffy has ceased trading after a major bust-up at board level.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"448\">Leeds-based CORE Special Projects said it was pulling off sites this week with Duffy and managing director Alan Cooper, a long-time associate of Duffy,\u00a0 blaming each other for the firm\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"635\">CORE was born out of Hewlett Renewables in the wake of the Hewlett Group collapse 10 years ago. It operated mainly across housing sites in the North for clients including Crest Nicholson and Lovell.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"635\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"497899\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.surveymonkey.com%2Fr%2FH2XG7CF%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Meet_The_Buyer.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"774\">Accounts for the year to March 2024, signed off by Cooper, showed an 11% drop in turnover to \u00a317m generating a small pre-tax profit of \u00a3273,000.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"776\" data-end=\"965\">But things took a turn for the worse this year, and Cooper quit the business at the end of April with fellow director Lee Ferreday to set up a new outfit called Fuse Civils.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1021\">Duffy told clients in a memo seen by the <em data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1018\">Enquirer<\/em>: &#8220;It is with regret that following a review of the Core Special Projects business during the month of May, the directors and shareholders have decided that there is no alternative for the company but to cease trading from today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1379\">He claimed the firm&#8217;s finances were far worse than reported and accused former directors of walking away without warning.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1379\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"488804\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.creaghconcrete.com%2Fproducts%2Fspantherm%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE-spantherm.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1379\">\u201cShortcomings in the management by certain former directors has caused the principal funder to withdraw financial support at short notice and alternative funding could not be found,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1654\">Duffy added that an orderly withdrawal from sites was now underway, and insolvency advisers were being brought in to speak with creditors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1776\">But Cooper hit back, pointing to CORE\u2019s 2024 accounts and claiming the business was dragged down by inter-company debts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1776\">He said: \u201cYou only have to look at the last accounts to see what independent auditors said about the business. A lot of money is owed to the business from related businesses that Mr Duffy is in control of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1776\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"474739\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrilliantideasltd.co.uk%2Falimats%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6507-BI---Alimats-MPU---Constuction-Enquirer_01_s2.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2094\">Those accounts show Core Construction Management owed CORE Special Projects \u00a33.6m, while Core Plant owed a further \u00a3400,000.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2096\" data-end=\"2111\">Cooper added: \u201cI gave him regular updates about the financial position. I was even trying to buy the business off him but we couldn&#8217;t agree on the amount.
