pull-off 220m HS2 viaduct slide in 3 days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"209\" data-end=\"380\">HS2 engineers have completed a three-day operation to slide the 1,300-tonne deck of the Lower Thorpe viaduct into position near Thorpe Mandeville in West Northamptonshire.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"382\" data-end=\"520\">The 220m-long structure is the last of five \u201cdouble composite\u201d viaducts on the central section of HS2 to be installed using the technique.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"729\">Delivered by main works contractor EKFB \u2013 Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial and BAM \u2013 the steel and concrete deck was slid into place over three days using PTFE-covered pads to reduce friction.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" data-end=\"847\">Once in place, it will be lowered 60cm onto permanent bearings before work begins on the concrete deck and parapets.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"847\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"1002\">The weathering steel viaduct spans a floodplain and Banbury Lane and is designed to blend with the surrounding countryside while managing local drainage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1228\">EKFB technical director Janice McKenna said the \u201cdouble composite\u201d system \u2013 using hollow steel sections with reinforced concrete slabs \u2013 helped slash embodied carbon by up to 59% compared to traditional solid concrete beams.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1228\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a work, with final touches now underway across the five viaducts between the Chilterns and South Warwickshire.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1606\">Westbury is the most advanced, where cantilever formwork travellers are being used to build concrete decks span-by-span without cranes, boosting safety and efficiency.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1606\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu
