The Construction Skills Mission Board will hold its first meeting today with a target of attracting 100,000 new workers into the industry.<\/p>\n

The government has also unveiled plans to make more construction roles\u00a0available to jobseekers as Jobcentres work more closely with the industry to offer work experience and tailored placements.<\/p>\n

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner will co-chair the first Construction Skills Mission Board with Mark Reynolds, Co-Chair of the Construction Leadership Council today.<\/p>\n

The Board will develop specific initiatives and actions to deliver the mission, while supporting the Government to shape, develop and deliver skills policy.<\/p>\n

Actions will focus on five key areas to drive increased recruitment:<\/p>\n

\u2022 confidence to employ and invest;
\n\u2022 clear new entrant pathways;
\n\u2022 access to provision & support to train;
\n\u2022 funding that works; and
\n\u2022 reliable and rewarding careers.<\/p>\n

The Board said it “will work with industry bodies to ensure these actions are rolled out across the sector.”<\/p>\n

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: “The construction sector is on the frontline in our mission to grow the economy, giving more people skilled jobs building the homes and infrastructure we need.<\/p>\n

“The Construction Skills Mission Board will make sure we hear directly from employers about what their skills needs are, driving our reforms and helping more young people achieve and thrive.”<\/p>\n

From August, new construction foundation apprenticeships, backed by an additional \u00a340m, will provide young people at the start of their career with a route into construction.The scheme comes as part of the governments Youth Guarantee to ensure every young person is either earning or learning and will give youngsters skills in a range of specialist occupations, such as brick laying and carpentry.<\/p>\n

Reynolds said: “The Construction Skills Mission Board represents a new partnership between industry and government, working together to find industry-led, collaborative solutions to delivering the workforce of the future.<\/p>\n

“I am delighted that we have seen such strong support from Ministers and some of the most important leaders in our sector \u2013 and I hope everyone will play their part in the delivery of this essential mission.”<\/p>\n
