{"id":6372,"date":"2025-07-03T07:46:44","date_gmt":"2025-07-03T07:46:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=6372"},"modified":"2025-07-03T07:46:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-03T07:46:44","slug":"cubby-reborn-in-12m-svella-backed-takeover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/cubby-reborn-in-12m-svella-backed-takeover\/","title":{"rendered":"Cubby reborn in \u00a312m Svella-backed takeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"83\" data-end=\"275\">Investment firm Svella has completed the acquisition of Carlisle-based Cubby Construction, building a base to create a major regional contracting business.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"277\" data-end=\"485\">Led by former Stobart director Andrew Tinkler, Svella is committing \u00a312m into a newly-formed Cubby Group that brings together 14 integrated businesses drawn from both Svella\u2019s and Cubby\u2019s existing operations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"682\">Cubby Construction, established in 1968, built a strong reputation in construction, civil engineering, and joinery manufacturing, operating across north west England and the Scottish Borders.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"682\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"478038\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.creaghconcrete.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE_Creagh.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"682\">But the \u00a324m turnover contractor ran into problems working on Galliford Try\u2019s Carlisle Southern Link Road project which it exited late last year leaving it with liquidity problems.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_499307\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-07-02-at-23.54.06-scaled.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-499307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-07-02-at-23.54.06-scaled.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1408\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Kirk Taylor, Andrew Tinkler and Darcie Rae from Svella<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"955\">The new-look Cubby Group also brings in parts of Svella\u2019s growing portfolio, including the telecoms, plant hire, transport and accommodation arms it acquired from failed contractor nmcn four years ago. Svella has since added a rail consultancy and EV infrastructure specialist Aberla to the fold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"957\" data-end=\"1002\">The expanded Cubby Group structure comprises:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1299\">\n<li data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1086\">\n<p data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1086\"><strong data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1020\">Core units<\/strong>: Cubby Construction, Civils, Joinery, Utilities, and Plant Hire<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1196\">\n<p data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1196\"><strong data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1116\">Associated acquisitions<\/strong>: Briscoe Construction, Finlaysons Contracts, Laidlaw Building and Scaffolding<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1245\">\n<p data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1245\"><strong data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1218\">Energy and rail<\/strong>: Aberla Energy, Avidrail<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1246\" data-end=\"1299\">\n<p data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1466\">Backed by Svella\u2019s wider operational platform, the Cubby Group is now aiming to extend its footprint across the north of England, southern Scotland and the Midlands.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1468\" data-end=\"1592\">The new group employs around 350 people and is targeting long-term growth in renewables, utilities, rail and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1711\">Executive chairman Tinkler confirmed the group is aiming to grow revenues to over \u00a350m by the end of May 2026.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1711\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"491998\" management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2273\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Cubby Group now operates from multiple bases including Carlisle, Jedburgh, Galashiels,
