{"id":649,"date":"2018-11-21T07:43:12","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T07:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=649"},"modified":"2018-11-21T07:43:12","modified_gmt":"2018-11-21T07:43:12","slug":"94m-coventry-station-and-precint-revamp-approved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/94m-coventry-station-and-precint-revamp-approved\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a394m Coventry Station and precint revamp approved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ambitious plans to revamp Coventry railway station and transform a precinct in the city centre have moved forward in the countdown to 2021 when the city is UK City of Culture.<\/p>\n<p>Council planners have approved \u00a382m to upgrade Coventry Station into a new transport hub and a \u00a312m plan to improve the Upper Precinct in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>The railway station, which was opened in 1962, will proceed in two phases and has been designed by D5 Architect and consultant WSP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"242821\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Foffsiteconstructionshow.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/OCS MPC Banner 2018-10.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first phase to construct a new footbridge and canopies and an access tunnel under Warwick Road is already underway.<\/p>\n<p>The second phase involves building a 633-space multi-storey car park, new station concourse with access to all platforms and Warwick Road, and a new pedestrian route via an access tunnel under Warwick Road to a new bus interchange.<\/p>\n<p>Coventry City Council is working in partnership with Network Rail, Virgin Trains and other rail operators, Transport for West Midlands, Friargate Coventry LLP and other stakeholders to deliver the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"93789\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionline.co.uk%2Fevents%2F\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Constructionline-MeetTheBuyer-295x245-v4.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Work is hoped to be completed by the end of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, plans by\u00a0Shearer Property Group to revamp the\u00a0Upper Precinct shopping area were also backed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upper-Precinct-02-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-256400\" src=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Upper-Precinct-02-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"410\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These plans will see the removal of big escalators\u00a0and footbridges which connect the area to West Orchards Shopping Centre and re-establish the view to Coventry Cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Empty upper floors of the Upper Precinct will also be turned into new 75-room student accommodation.
