{"id":6696,"date":"2025-07-19T20:46:22","date_gmt":"2025-07-19T20:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=6696"},"modified":"2025-07-19T20:46:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-19T20:46:22","slug":"true-cash-cost-of-hs2-to-date-tops-40bn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/true-cash-cost-of-hs2-to-date-tops-40bn\/","title":{"rendered":"True cash cost of HS2 to date tops \u00a340bn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"268\" data-end=\"436\">The government has confirmed that its has sunk over \u00a340bn into HS2 so far, with ministers admitting there\u2019s still no clear estimate for the final cost or completion date.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"624\">Transport secretary Heidi Alexander, who has resumed 6-month progress reports to MPs, gave the first spending update on the mega project at nominal or cash terms, rather than benchmark 2019 prices previously preferred by the Government.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"624\">Over \u00a337.9bn has already spent on Phase One of the the troubled megaproject between London and Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"624\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"468489\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.flanneryplanthire.com%2Fplant-operator-training%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/flannery.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"438\" data-end=\"624\">That includes \u00a326.4bn on civils, \u00a33.6bn on land, \u00a32.3bn on stations and \u00a32bn on systems.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"971\">A further \u00a32.6bn has been spent on the cancelled legs north of Birmingham, bringing total cost so far to \u00a340.5bn.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1263\">She confirmed 70% of the 32 miles of tunnels between London and Birmingham have now been bored.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1263\">But much more has still to be delivered. Major civil works are underway on 44 viaducts, 126 bridges, 75 embankments and 60 cuttings, while tunnelling machines are now being assembled at Old Oak Common ahead of the final tunnelling push to Euston, due to start next Spring.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"1263\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"488804\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.creaghconcrete.com%2Fproducts%2Fspantherm%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/CE-spantherm.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1507\">She added HS2 had been plagued by delays, inflated costs, poor governance and weak supply chain performance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1507\">New CEO Mark Wild will set out his full reset plan to get the scheme back under control next Spring.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1507\">&#8220;To validate this new estimate, there is also work underway to verify the civils work delivered to date and its cost.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1265\" data-end=\"1507\">&#8220;This will allow the programme to validate true delivery costs against the original estimates. This information, combined with continued investment in collating benchmarking data from international comparators, will give us a more reliable \u2018should cost\u2019 model for the remainder of the programme,&#8221;
