{"id":6738,"date":"2025-07-22T07:46:49","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T07:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=6738"},"modified":"2025-07-22T07:46:49","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T07:46:49","slug":"sdc-gets-date-for-60m-iconic-stirling-building-revamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/sdc-gets-date-for-60m-iconic-stirling-building-revamp\/","title":{"rendered":"SDC gets date for \u00a360m iconic Stirling Building revamp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"146\" data-end=\"372\">Bedfordshire contractor SDC will begin work in early 2026 on a major \u00a360m refurbishment of Cambridge University\u2019s iconic James Stirling-designed Faculty of History building, after securing planning and listed building consent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"374\" data-end=\"603\">The landmark Grade II* listed building, completed in 1968 and forming part of Stirling\u2019s famous &#8216;Red Trilogy&#8217;, is set for a full restoration including new extensions, a full services upgrade and major sustainability improvements.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"605\" data-end=\"815\">The job marks the first major award through the University\u2019s Consultants and Contractors Framework. SDC is understood to have beaten Kier, Bowmer &amp; Kirkland, and Willmott Dixon to land the prestigious contract.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_499850\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-07-21-at-23.01.03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-499850 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-07-21-at-23.01.03.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1578\" height=\"972\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">How the reading hall will look following the refurbishment<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"1097\">Designed by BDP with engineering support from Arup, the revamp will address long-standing issues such as water ingress and poor thermal comfort, while restoring original architectural features.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"1097\">In addition to upgrading the building fabric and replacing services, the proposals include two new pavilions that will provide additional library and study space and improve both accessibility and fire egress.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_499851\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-07-04-at-14.12.14-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-499851 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2024-07-04-at-14.12.14-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1340\" height=\"944\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The south pavilion, one of two proposed extensions to the building<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1099\" data-end=\"1312\">The University aims to hit BREEAM Excellent and adopt a zero-gas strategy as part of its wider sustainability goals.
