{"id":6820,"date":"2025-07-24T07:47:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-24T07:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=6820"},"modified":"2025-07-24T07:47:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T07:47:09","slug":"bridge-faults-plunge-severfield-into-18m-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/bridge-faults-plunge-severfield-into-18m-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"Bridge faults plunge Severfield into \u00a318m loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"199\" data-end=\"330\">Severfield has slumped to a near \u00a318m pre-tax loss after counting the cost of major welding fault on a string of bridge contracts and other bridge related issues.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"332\" data-end=\"548\">The steelwork giant booked \u00a335.6m of non-underlying costs in the year to March, including \u00a323.4m for bridge remedial works.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"332\" data-end=\"548\">It said total bridge testing and remediation costs for around a dozen structures had been contained at \u00a343.4m, offset in part by a \u00a320m insurance payout.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"332\" data-end=\"548\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"498213\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ardenttide.co.uk%2Fcw%2FArticle-Seamless-Transition.html%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/atl-300-250.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"681\" data-end=\"888\">But fresh bridge issues not linked to the original welding faults were reveal leading the firm to book an extra \u00a39m in costs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"681\" data-end=\"888\">Severfield said this fresh provision stemmed from a reversal of revenue for certain variation orders with clients, following delays in payment and increased uncertainty over their recoverability, together with provisions for third-party consequential costs and claims.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"1074\">Britain biggest steelwork contractor was also hit by a tougher market and project delays.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"1074\">This saw revenue dip 3% to \u00a3451m, while underlying pre-tax profit halved to \u00a318m. Core construction operating margin dropped from 8.3% to 4.9%. A final dividend has been suspended.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"890\" data-end=\"1074\">\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"474739\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrilliantideasltd.co.uk%2Falimats%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6507-BI---Alimats-MPU---Constuction-Enquirer_01_s2.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1307\">Severfield cut around 6% of its workforce in March as part of a cost-saving drive and has agreed an option to sell up to 24.9% of its Indian 50:50 joint venture to partner JSW Steel for \u00a320m, although it currently has no plans to do so.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1307\">The firm booked \u00a32.9m cost for redundancies and severance costs for the outgoing CEO, Alan Dunsmore.
