{"id":6956,"date":"2025-07-31T07:47:01","date_gmt":"2025-07-31T07:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=6956"},"modified":"2025-07-31T07:47:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-31T07:47:01","slug":"london-new-home-starts-slump-59-as-safety-regime-bites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/london-new-home-starts-slump-59-as-safety-regime-bites\/","title":{"rendered":"London new home starts slump 59% as safety regime bites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New home registrations have slumped by 59% in London, dragging on otherwise modest UK-wide growth in house building during the second quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh figures from the NHBC show registrations across the UK rose 4% in Q2 compared to a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>But this masked sharp regional contrasts, with the capital suffering a 59% fall as developers and housing associations wrestle with delays linked to the Building Safety Regulator and tightening social housing budgets.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"439734\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intersteels.com%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Retro-FitsteelspecialistsGIF-ezgif.com-resize.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK\u2019s largest warranty provider said a total of 30,405 new homes were registered in Q2 2025, up from 29,103 in the same period last year and slightly above Q1\u2019s total.<\/p>\n<p>But London was the standout laggard, recording the steepest drop of any region to 904 homes as the post-Grenfell high-rise safety regime continues to dent delivery and confidence in high-rise schemes.<\/p>\n<p>The other big regional high rise market North West and Merseyside was down 18% at just over 2000 homes.<\/p>\n<p>New flats registrations across the UK were down 23% year-on-year, with the NHBC pointing to a clear shift in developer focus towards low-rise homes.
