{"id":7536,"date":"2025-09-02T14:46:57","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T14:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=7536"},"modified":"2025-09-02T14:46:57","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T14:46:57","slug":"merit-looking-to-expand-despite-unexpected-tax-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/merit-looking-to-expand-despite-unexpected-tax-demand\/","title":{"rendered":"Merit looking to expand despite unexpected tax demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Offsite construction specialist Merit is progressing with expansion plans despite an unexpected winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs.<\/p>\n<p>Bosses at the North East based contractor were taken by surprise by the move by the tax man last week.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is now set for talks with HMRC to settle the bill which the <em>Enquirer<\/em> understands relates to R&amp;D tax credits.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"492636\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwinchmorebrickwork.co.uk%2Fabout-us%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/WINChMORE_JOBS_MPU.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The petition was served against holding company Merit Group Services and had no impact on sites or the trading business.<\/p>\n<p>It came as Merit continues to work with Interpath Advisory to secure new funding for growth plans including a major factory extension to help service a \u00a31.6bn work pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is also in negotiations with a key client about overdue payments on a job.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"127094\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fawkesandreecepartner.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mclaren gif.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A spokesperson for Merit said: \u201cWe are aware of reports that a winding up petition has been issued against Merit Group Services. We want to make clear this was unexpected and as yet, has not been received by the company. It does not relate to our trading businesses, Merit Holdings and Merit Health, which are unaffected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, however, we are currently in discussions with one of our key customers with regards to resolution of some substantial payments that are now significantly overdue.
