{"id":7550,"date":"2025-09-03T06:46:33","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T06:46:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=7550"},"modified":"2025-09-03T06:46:33","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T06:46:33","slug":"uk-cement-production-drops-to-lowest-level-since-1950","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/uk-cement-production-drops-to-lowest-level-since-1950\/","title":{"rendered":"UK cement production drops to lowest level since 1950"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UK cement production has hit its lowest level since 1950 as high energy, regulatory and labour costs hamper the sector.<\/p>\n<p>New data from the Mineral Products Association (MPA) shows the UK made 7.3m tonnes of cement in 2024 &#8211; around half of what it produced in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>It follows recent MPA data showing ready-mix concrete sales hit historic lows in the second quarter of 2025, with other materials also down on the previous year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"500628\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ciob.org%2Fevents%2Fsustainable-construction-shifting-the-narrative-1307801522559%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Sustainable_Conf_ MPU 300x250_(Aug 2025).gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The MPA warned the drop in cement production puts Labour\u2019s housebuilding and infrastructure plans at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Cement imports to the UK have nearly tripled over the past 20 years, rising from 12% of all sales in 2008 to 32% in 2024 leaving construction supply chains increasingly exposed to the risks of volatile international markets.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s cement manufacturers are battling some of the highest industrial electricity prices among developed nations and uneven carbon taxation as importers \u2013 especially those outside of the EU \u2013 don\u2019t pay the same costs for their emissions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"482425\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrilliantideasltd.co.uk%2Fnet-recovery-system%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/7175-BI---Safety-Net-Recovery-MPU_s2.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The UK\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is intended to address this from 2027, but the MPA said it needs to be supported with a procurement policy that prioritises domestically produced materials.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Diana Casey, executive director for cement and lime at the Mineral Products Association, said: \u201cCement is an essential industry, but the sector is increasingly under threat.
