Plans to build a second runway at London\u2019s Gatwick airport have finally got the green light after a decision was delayed in February.<\/p>\n

Heidi Alexander, transport secretary, approved the scheme with conditions on noise abatement and public transport provision.<\/p>\n

Gatwick Airport said the project is privately financed, requiring no taxpayer money, and is shovel-ready.<\/p>\n

The proposed plans would involve shifting the airport\u2019s emergency northern runway sideways by 12m and upgrading it for regular short-haul use.<\/p>\n

This change would allow for simultaneous operations on both runways while ensuring compliance with international safety standards.<\/p>\n

Other aspects of the proposal include new buildings and extensions at both North and South Terminals.<\/p>\n

Plans also include enhancements to airport access, improvements to surrounding highways, and additional environmental mitigation measures.<\/p>\n
