Heidelberg Materials UK has secured the contract to supply concrete for the main\u00a0 works at Sizewell C on the East Suffolk coast.<\/p>\n
The material is being used to construct the initial phase of the cut-off wall, which will\u00a0 run around the perimeter of the site of the new nuclear power station.<\/p>\n
The structure,\u00a0 which is comprised of concrete panels and a plastic wall, will extend more than 50\u00a0 metres into the ground. It will create a watertight barrier to enable around four million cubic metres of earth to be excavated from the site to allow construction of the two\u00a0 reactor units.<\/p>\n
Around 35,000 cubic metres of concrete will be supplied over the next seven months, initially from Heidelberg Materials\u2019 Ipswich concrete plant. The company is also\u00a0 installing a mobile batching plant at the Sizewell C site, which is expected to be\u00a0 operational by the end of the year.<\/p>\n
The concrete contains admixtures from Sika to\u00a0 ensure workability, allow a longer window for placing and compaction and inhibit the\u00a0 ingress of groundwater.<\/p>\n
