Student and build to rent specialist Watkin Jones has secured Scottish Government approval for its near 800-home regeneration of former livestock sheds at Chesser in west Edinburgh.<\/p>\n

The mixed-tenure development will now move ahead with plans for 293 build-to-rent homes, 406 purpose-built student rooms and 100 affordable units, alongside the restoration of listed market buildings around a new civic square.<\/p>\n

First approved by Edinburgh councillors in December 2022, the scheme was called in for ministerial review in February 2024 after noise concerns were raised.<\/p>\n

Sustainability measures include air-source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels and a target BREEAM \u2018Excellent\u2019 rating.<\/p>\n

Discussions are underway with a local registered provider to procure and manage the affordable housing element once built.<\/p>\n

Iain Smith, planning director at Watkin Jones, said: \u201cSecuring approval from Scottish Ministers for this landmark regeneration project in Chesser is another step in addressing the city\u2019s housing shortage.<\/p>\n

“Our new development helps to meet Edinburgh\u2019s housing needs across several tenures while preserving its heritage and creating a more sustainable neighbourhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Completion is targeted for 2029.<\/p>\n
