{"id":8838,"date":"2025-11-03T22:47:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T22:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=8838"},"modified":"2025-11-03T22:47:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T22:47:00","slug":"london-ready-mix-sales-dive-32-amid-housing-slump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/london-ready-mix-sales-dive-32-amid-housing-slump\/","title":{"rendered":"London ready-mix sales dive 32% amid housing slump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ready-mixed concrete sales in London have crashed by nearly a third as the capital\u2019s housing slump and high-rise planning delays at the Building Safety Regulator choke demand across the sector.<\/p>\n<p>New figures from the Mineral Products Association (MPA) paint a grim picture of the heavyside market, with sales of construction materials stuck at \u201ccrisis levels\u201d after four straight years of decline.<\/p>\n<p>The MPA\u2019s latest third-quarter returns show the construction sector on the ropes, with fragile activity, mounting job losses and capacity being stripped from the supply chain.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"494158\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.agd-equipment.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/AGD002_AGD-MPU_Pilers_300x250.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Across the country, ready-mix volumes dropped 12% year-on-year, continuing a downward trend that has seen sales fall in seven of the past eight years.<\/p>\n<p>London was the hardest hit, with volumes plunging 32% over the past year as developers battle a stagnant housing market and planning bottlenecks for tall buildings under the BSR\u2019s Gateway 2 regime.<\/p>\n<p>The MPA said the slowdown had been made worse by weak commercial activity and delays to major infrastructure jobs, with only limited lifelines from ongoing public-sector schemes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"163817\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionenquirer.com%2Fdirectory%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/enquirer_directory_mpu.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sand and gravel sales dropped 3% in the third quarter, asphalt edged up 2.5% but remained below last year\u2019s levels, and mortar volumes rose just 1% \u2014 still almost 30% below pre-2023 output after two years of steep decline.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-03-at-19.58.23.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-503029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-11-03-at-19.58.23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1736\" height=\"1684\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even large infrastructure projects have lost momentum following the HS2 reset and the scrapping of nine major road schemes, slashing demand for key materials.<\/p>\n<p>The MPA warned that many producers have been forced to mothball sites, cut capacity and shed skilled workers just to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"468489\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.flanneryplanthire.com%2Fplant-operator-training%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/flannery.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>MPA executive chair Chris Leese said: \u201cAnnouncements about infrastructure and planning are all well and good, but for now they remain promises of \u2018jam tomorrow\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Without urgent action that results in work on the ground now, the foundations of future delivery \u2014 investment, capacity and skilled labour \u2014 may not be there when the country needs them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In its Autumn Budget submission to the Chancellor, the MPA is calling for a package of pro-growth measures.
