{"id":9194,"date":"2025-11-21T07:46:58","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T07:46:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=9194"},"modified":"2025-11-21T07:46:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T07:46:58","slug":"joinery-firm-halts-apprentice-programme-over-skills-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/joinery-firm-halts-apprentice-programme-over-skills-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"Joinery firm halts apprentice programme over skills reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A leading joinery specialist has paused its apprenticeship programme in protest against government plans to reform training which &#8220;are not fit for purpose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Staircase and door manufacturer Stairways Midlands has been been forced into action by controversial plans from\u00a0Skills England to slash the duration of carpentry and joinery apprenticeships from 25 months to around eight.<\/p>\n<p>Other moves include altering final trainee assessments to allow organisations to \u201csample\u201d only a portion of the knowledge, skills and behaviours criteria to determine an apprentice\u2019s competence &#8211; rather than requiring them to demonstrate they meet all of them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"474739\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrilliantideasltd.co.uk%2Falimats%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6507-BI---Alimats-MPU---Constuction-Enquirer_01_s2.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Stairways Midlands said the shift would create a \u201crace to the bottom\u201d in training quality.<\/p>\n<p>The firm operates three Midlands-based factory units and was in a successful partnership with Walsall College training Level 2 Bench Carpentry and Joinery Apprentices every year.<\/p>\n<p>Joint Managing Director Karen Wood Joint Managing Director &#8211; who is also a Go Construct STEM Ambassador &#8211; said the company had \u201cno choice\u201d but to withdraw the offer of apprenticeship placements this year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"93789\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionline.co.uk%2Fevents%2Fattending-marketplace-live%2F%3Futm_source%3Dreferral%26utm_medium%3Dconstruction_enquirer%26utm_campaign%3Dall_mpl_supplier%26utm_year%3D2025%26utm_content%3Dad_gif\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/constructionline ezgif.com-speed.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>She said: \u201cApprenticeships have always been a cornerstone of our business and a vital pipeline for skilled talent. We\u2019ve proudly trained dozens of apprentices over the years \u2013 including several who have gone into management roles here \u2013 but under these new proposals, the model is simply not fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReducing training time to just eight months and removing thorough independent assessment shows a fundamental lack of appreciation for the range of skills and depth of knowledge it takes to do this work, and will set the industry back years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had no choice but to pause our apprenticeship intake for the first time in more than two decades. It\u2019s deeply frustrating, but we cannot in good conscience support a reformed system that seems to prioritise speed and cost over competence and safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"439734\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intersteels.com%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Retro-FitsteelspecialistsGIF-ezgif.com-resize.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trade body the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has written to the Prime Minister calling for an immediate suspension of the plans.<\/p>\n<p>Wood added:\u00a0\u201cWe need properly trained, competent people entering our industry. Short-term policy decisions like this not only devalue the hard work of apprentices and trainers but undermine the culture of safety and excellence that the construction sector has worked so hard to build.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe BWF has been clear that the reforms as they stand are not supported by the industry.
