London developer Areli\u2019s long-awaited plan to flatten Maidenhead\u2019s tired Nicholson Centre and replace it with a soaring new mixed-use quarter has finally been waved through by local councillors.<\/p>\n

The hybrid application \u2014 unanimously approved by Windsor and Maidenhead\u2019s planning committee \u2014 paves the way for 856 new flats across blocks rising to 20 storeys, 55 new shops and commercial units, and a 452-space multi-storey car park.<\/p>\n

The project will bulldoze all but two existing buildings on the 1960s-built shopping centre site to make way for four new towers of 10, 13, 17 and 20 storeys.<\/p>\n

Most of the homes will be one-bed flats, with 100 earmarked for over-75s. None of the units will be affordable.

The Nicholson Quarter plan, designed by architect JTP, also carves out a new civic plaza \u2014 Sir Nicholas Winton Square \u2014 set to become the town centre\u2019s focal point.<\/p>\n

The fresh approval updates the original 2021 consent and reflects market-driven changes, including cutting office space and lowering the previous 25-storey peak.<\/p>\n

Final approval is subject to a Section 106 deal, including cash towards local car park upgrades.<\/p>\n

Work is hoped to start in the first quarter of next year.<\/p>\n
