{"id":9226,"date":"2025-11-24T08:46:54","date_gmt":"2025-11-24T08:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=9226"},"modified":"2025-11-24T08:46:54","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T08:46:54","slug":"monster-shaft-sinker-kicks-off-grain-tilbury-power-tunnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/monster-shaft-sinker-kicks-off-grain-tilbury-power-tunnel\/","title":{"rendered":"Monster shaft-sinker kicks off Grain\u2013Tilbury power tunnel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Europe\u2019s largest-diameter vertical shaft sinking machine has been fired up in Tilbury as Ferrovial BEMO JV begins sinking the first access shaft for National Grid\u2019s new Thames power tunnel.<\/p>\n<p>Named Verena, after pioneering mechanical engineer Verena Holmes, the German-built machine marks the start of major works on the \u00a3230m Grain to Tilbury upgrade \u2013 a central strand of the Great Grid Upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>The 2.2km, 400kV cable tunnel will replace the ageing 1960s Thames Cable Tunnel between Tilbury and Gravesend, which has reached the end of its working life.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"498213\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ardenttide.co.uk%2Farticles%2FWhen-HMRC-Comes-Knocking.aspx%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/ardent new.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ferrovial BEMO JV will deliver the twin-shaft scheme, beginning with a 15m internal diameter, 48m-deep structure now being sunk from the Tilbury site.
