{"id":9444,"date":"2025-12-03T08:46:48","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T08:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/?p=9444"},"modified":"2025-12-03T08:46:48","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T08:46:48","slug":"iconic-london-meat-and-fish-markets-line-up-royal-docks-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cita.co.uk\/news\/iconic-london-meat-and-fish-markets-line-up-royal-docks-move\/","title":{"rendered":"Iconic London meat and fish markets line up Royal Docks move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Traders at London&#8217;s iconic Billingsgate and Smithfield markets have agreed a preferred new home at the Royal Docks paving the way for massive development plans at the exisiting sites.<\/p>\n<p>The City of London Corporation and GLA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to relocate both historic wholesale markets at Albert Island next to City Airport in Newham.<\/p>\n<p>The ambitious plans now hinge on Parliamentary approval to formally end trading at the current sites in 2028 and planning consent from Newham Council.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"474739\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrilliantideasltd.co.uk%2Falimats%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6507-BI---Alimats-MPU---Constuction-Enquirer_01_s2.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Talks will now start with potential delivery partners to detail how both markets will be incorporated on the Royal Docks site, including funding, viability, construction sequencing at Albert Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-12-03-at-07.54.12.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-12-03-at-07.54.12.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1402\" height=\"884\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-503977\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The relocation unlocks two of London\u2019s most sought-after redevelopment opportunities. <\/p>\n<p>Subject to the Bill passing, the grade II-listed halls of the Smithfield meat market site in central London will be turned into an international cultural and commercial hub alongside the London Museum. <\/p>\n<p>Billingsgate\u2019s Canary Wharf-side fish market site will also be transformed, delivering around 4,000 new homes and a new pedestrian and cycle bridge.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a data-ad-id=\"439734\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intersteels.com%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Retro-FitsteelspecialistsGIF-ezgif.com-resize.gif\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alongside developing these two London sites, the City Corporation is also working with Barking &#038; Dagenham on future plans for the 42-acre Barking Reach site, previously earmarked for the combined markets. <\/p>\n<p>The riverside location is seen as a prime logistics base with access to international supply chains via the Thames Estuary Gateway. Further details will be shared as discussions with developers progress.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed Albert Island site has permission for around 750,000 sq ft of development and a new boatyard.<\/p>\n<p>New Billingsgate and New Smithfield will also feature a major food school, offering accredited training for butchers, fishmongers, fruiterers and apprentices.<\/p>\n<p>City of London Corporation policy chairman Chris Hayward said: \u201cWe are investing in London\u2019s future.
